The first three lessons in chapter 2 are super easy!
Lesson 1
これ/それ/あれ/どれ
These words are used to reference the location of an item in relation to the speaker.
これ is used for items close to the speaker. Essentially “This thing”
Ex: これはぺんです。 This is a pen.
それ is used for items a little further away. Essentially “That thing”
Ex: それは自転車です。That is a bicycle.
あれ is used for things far away. Essentially “That thing that is far away from me”
Ex: あれは本です。
どれ is a question word meaning “which”
Ex:どれですか。Which is it?
Lesson 2
この/その/あの/どの+Noun
These words are used to reference the location of a specific item (Noun) in relation to the speaker. They can also be used to reference a person!
この is used for nouns close to the speaker.
Ex: この本はいくらですか。How much is this book?
その is used for nouns a little further away.
Ex: そのえんぴつは青いです。That pencil is blue.
あの is used for nouns far away.
Ex: あの時計はいくらですか。How much is that watch over there?
どの is a question word meaning…You guessed it: “which”!
Ex: どの男の子はアメリカ人ですか。Which boy is American?
Lesson 3
ここ/そこ/あそこ/どこ
These words are used to reference places!
ここ is used for places close to the speaker
Ex: ここは私の家です。This place is my house.
そこ is used for places a little further away.
Ex: 図書館はそこです。The library is there.
あそこ is used for places far away.
Ex: 公園はあそこです。
どこ is a question word meaning “where”.
Ex: トイレはどこですか。Where is the restroom?
